I would love to see the Enrichment program continue next year, but it really needs to be tied more closely with the curriculum in the classes. It would be great if each grade could come up with a way of doing their own Enrichment.
I feel that the definition of school means balancing the physical, mental and social abilities of students. School today consist of 1 gym period every other day, and 4+ periods enhancing mental ability. school offers very litte social benefits.
Students can not fully succeed without being experienced in these skills. I feel that students need more opportunity in school to develop their social skills.
As a member of the enrichment program I feel that we should be taught more advanced studies. The curriculum in the classroom is standard, in the enrichment program students should have the opportunity to learn about things not otherwise taught in the classroom.
What do you mean by "More Advanced Studies?" Are you referring to going deeper with topics already covered in classes, or are there specific classes that you would like to see taught?

I would beg to differ that school does not offer the social interactions you are looking for. There are a large variety of mediums set up at GVCS where social activity is the idea. These include things like Holding tank, lunch, dances, Middle School Activities, and even PE, Band, Choir, and Art to some extent. These all have elements of social interaction built into them. We also do large amounts of work in the Elementary school in groups working on group dynamics frequently.
If you have specific ideas on how we might increase the effectiveness of social activities, I am all ears, because, like you, I find that this is one of the most important things we teach!
I firmly believe for an enrichment program to truly have the outcome that it desires and be successful that schools need to dedicate an enrichment teacher that oversees the entire program. Schools do not focus enough on our gifted and talented students and those are the students that schools are letting fall through the cracks. We need to spend the time and resources developing our high achieving students.
I agree wholeheartedly that in a perfect world there would be an Enrichment teacher dedicated to activities that truly challenge our top students. The problem (as is usually true in public education) typically is funding. Funding is available for many things, but Enrichment isn't always one of them.

i KNOW that we should have flip flops ed because if someone fell it is there dumb

There are a couple of reasons why flip flops are a no-go. One- they do pose a safety risk since we have now had three falls attributed to them. Two- Our current policy (in the student handbook) is clear that any footwear that poses a safety concern should not be worn.
I am not against talking about this, but as our current handbook reads, we need to enforce the rule.
I am open to the idea of limiting the flip flop ban to the younger kids, but it will need to be discussed. You are correct to say that it has been the youngest students who have fallen. We will discuss this in our administrative meeting. I appreciate your input!

If money can be found thru grants for programs such as Reading First then there must be programs for Enrichment programs.
There are indeed grants available for Enrichment activities! I have three on my desk right now. Once the "end of the year mayhem" settles, I hope to get them out. Thank you for reminding me!

back to the subject of enrichment! ENRICHMENT ISNT ABOUT SCHOOL AND EDUCATION AND WE CAN STILL LEARN FROM IT. THATS WHET US STUDENTS LIKE ABOUT IT. WE HEVE 9 PERIODS TO LEARN AND ENRICHMENT GIVES US A BREAK FROM IT
what i think we need is a new subject to talk about. we have talked about this subjecy for to long.
Hey Mr.ED I think that you should allow students to be able to have their cell phones and iPods in class so the students could use them when ever the teachers allow us to.

To: Scio School Board and GVCS Board
Thank you for the soap box.
My reason for attendance is that the budget affects all in area.
The nation has suffered a terrible decline in its global spheres of political, science, economic, and environmental influence.
People on the planet have damaged the soil, water, fishermen have over fished the oceans, car makers and car buyers have damaged the air and climate, farmers have over mined the soil, the forests are being stripped and the bankers have destroyed the banking system. We have been living an unsustainable life style and now our school system is unsustainable.
Director of the movie “The Wrestler” in a NPR radio interview talked about how the friends he grew up with and that half were crack dealers and the other half were Stock Brokers, and we wonder why things are screwed up, they are the same people, the same culture running Wall Street.
The only place these things can be fixed is in our schools.
Scio School on their website runs a headline slide show of basketball and cheerleaders that warns, “don't touch this”.
The change that has to take place is not just a placeholder.
In spite of cuts we have to bring the students to a new higher level of learning.
The BOCES program has to be brought to a new level of technological learning and respect.
Emphasis in the school system has to placed on learning, health, exercise, diet and not something that leads to a Super Bowl Obese Couch Potato at age 35. Health care is a major problem also draining resources .
America needs your participation for recovery now more than ever.
America's prosperity since WWII is over, the culture that has put us in this position is everywhere and “we are it”. I am sure, most all of you see what is happening, do you have the will and courage to change it, only you can.
